Welcome, like family.

In Greece, a guest is a gift. The word is xenía, and it is why the Lefteris family greets every table like cousins coming home.

Bacci: We made it! First, tell Yiayiá how your table is feeling. Then take your Greek passport: six doors, six stamps, and a surprise on the last one.

Yiayiá’s stories.

Yiayiá Eléni: Sit under my olive tree. Tap a story and I will tell it to you. Each one ends with a question for your table. Then pledge a kind act and help me with the harvest.

1. Bacci Sails to Santorini

Bacci was nervous. A new country, new words, new faces. When his boat reached the white houses with blue roofs, a little girl waved and called, “Yia sou!” Bacci waved back. Her smile made his worry float away like a sail in the wind.

That night he learned that one warm hello can turn a stranger into a friend.

Who said hello to you and made you feel better?

2. The Olive Tree of Kindness

Elítsa the Olive was the smallest olive on the tree. “I am too little to help,” she sighed. Yiayiá Eléni smiled. “This tree is a hundred years old, and it grew one tiny olive at a time. Small kindness grows big.”

So Elítsa shared her shade with a tired bee, and the bee told the flowers, and soon the whole grove was helping each other. That is philótimo: doing good just because it is right.

What small kind thing could you do today?

3. The Long Way Home

Long ago, Greek storytellers told of Odysseus, a traveler who spent ten years finding his way home. Storms, giants and wrong turns got in his way, but he never gave up, because his family was waiting.

Bacci thought about it. “So being brave is not about never being scared. It is about keeping going, for the people you love.”

When did you keep going even when something was hard?

4. Yiayiá’s Mezze Plate

For the big family dinner, everyone brought one dish. Hélios brought lemon potatoes, golden as the sun. Elítsa brought olives. Bacci was worried. “I didn’t cook anything!” Yiayiá laughed and cut the spanakopita. “You brought your kéfi, your joy. That is the best dish of all.”

They danced, they shared, and by the time the baklava came out, every plate was empty. Ópa!

What do you bring to our family table that makes it special?

5. The Flame That Cooled

One night the saganaki flamed so high that little Niko jumped and shouted. His face went hot and red. “I am angry at the fire!” he said. Yiayiá put her hand flat on the table. “Feel the wood. Breathe in. Now watch.” The flame shrank, the cheese turned golden, and Niko’s breath slowed with it.

“Thymós, anger, is a flame,” Yiayiá said. “It is allowed. It just needs a moment to become something warm.”

What helps your flame cool down when it gets big?

Breathe with Hélios.

Hélios: Watch me glow. Breathe in as I grow big. Breathe out as I sink gently into the sea. Four slow rounds and the whole table is softer.

Ópa!

Kéfi is the Greek word for joy that spills over. When the saganaki cheese flames at the table, the whole room shouts it together: Ópa!
