Welcome, like family.

In Italy, welcome is ospitalità, and the old saying is a tavola non si invecchia: at the table, nobody grows old. It is why the Pizza Beat family, a Yonkers tradition since 1977, greets every table like cousins coming home.

Bacci: We made it! First, tell Nonna Rosa how your table is feeling. Then take your Italian passport: six doors, six stamps, and a surprise on the last one.

III · Nonna’s Kitchen

Nonna’s stories.

Nonna Rosa: Pull up a chair by my oven. Tap a story and I will tell it to you. Each one ends with a question for your table. Then pledge a kind act and help me pick the basil.

1. Bacci Lands in Napoli

Bacci was nervous. New words, new faces, and everyone talking with their hands! When his boat reached the harbor, a boy on the pier waved both arms and called, “Ciao!” Bacci waved back with both arms too. They both laughed, and his worry floated away like a seagull.

That night, at a long table under strings of lights, Bacci learned that in Italy a stranger is only a friend who has not had dinner with you yet.

Who said hello to you and made you feel better?

2. Pepi, the Smallest Leaf

Pepi the Basil Leaf was the smallest leaf on the plant. “I am too little to matter,” he sighed. Nonna Rosa clucked and lifted him up. “Look at this pizza. Tomato, mozzarella, and then you. A Margherita without basil is just a pizza. With you, it is a family.”

Pepi sat proudly on top, and everyone at the table said he was the best part. That is la famiglia: every person at the table matters, even the smallest.

What is the small thing you do that makes our family feel complete?

3. Piano Piano up the Steps

The village by the sea had three hundred steps. Bacci ran up the first fifty, puffing, then sat down with a very red face. “I will never make it.” Nonna Rosa climbed past him, one slow step at a time. “Piano piano, tesoro. Slowly, slowly. Nobody climbs three hundred steps. You climb one step, three hundred times.”

They stopped for a lemon granita halfway, counted cats, and at the top the whole sea was waiting for them, gold in the sunset.

What is something you are learning piano piano, a little at a time?

4. Luna and the Sweet Nothing

Luna the Moon rose over Napoli and looked down at the piazza. Everyone was busy, and Bacci was busiest of all; his head felt as full as a Sunday table. “Bacci,” whispered Luna, “lie down on the warm stones and look at me. Do nothing. Not one thing.”

So Bacci lay down. The stones were warm from the day, the lights swayed, and a mandolin played somewhere far away. Italians call it dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing. Resting is not lazy. It is how the dough rises.

When do you get a little time to do sweet nothing?

5. The Oven That Cooled

Enzo lost the soccer game in the piazza by one goal, and his face went hot and red. “I am angry at everything!” he shouted. Nonna Rosa put his two hands flat on the cool marble counter beside the oven. “Feel the marble. Now breathe in like the oven door opening, slow, and out like the steam, slower.”

Enzo watched the oven fire. It did not go out. It only got smaller and warmer, warm enough to bake bread. “Rabbia, anger, is a fire,” said Nonna. “It is allowed. It only needs a little air and a little time.” Then Enzo walked back to the piazza and said “good game” to his friend.

What helps your oven cool down when it gets too hot?

IV · Tuscan Sunset

Breathe with Sole.

Sole: Watch me glow over the hills. Breathe in as I grow big. Breathe out as I sink gently behind the cypress trees. Four slow rounds and the whole table is softer.

VI · La Festa

Evviva!

In an Italian piazza, a festa means lights on strings, a tarantella, and everyone shouting together: Evviva! Hooray! A pizza beat is a rhythm, and the whole table is the band.

Nonna Rosa: Italian families keep a cornicello, a little red horn, for good luck. Tap to bump yours against mine. The horn that stays a horn keeps its luck, and the other one sprouts a clover for the whole table.
