About this tradition

Diwali, also called Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival often associated with light, knowledge and the victory of good over evil, with different stories and customs across regions. Jain communities observe Mahavira’s liberation, while Sikh Bandi Chhor Divas commemorates Guru Hargobind’s release from imprisonment and has its own distinct meaning.

Dates and observances vary by community and calendar. Hindu Diwali, Jain observance and Sikh Bandi Chhor Divas should be learned about distinctly, without assuming identical beliefs or practices.
